TSA Homepage History
adapted from Weerasak Witthawaskul

We do not know exactly when the first TSA homepage came about. Before TSA registered as an official Registered Organization in 1998, the homepage had been created, and maintained unofficially by the members who saw benefits of having a web page for our community and those who are interested.

In 1997, the unofficial TSA web page was a link from Phichet Chaoha’s [Nueng]. Thanks to Neung, that simple homepage contained very useful information such as news and information of Thai UIUC students, Champaign-Urbana weather, and many useful links. Unfortunately, we do not have a screenshot of that web page. One of its most useful features was a member directory. One could search any Thai student member name, nickname, department, or phone number. Moreover, Neung also created the TSA mailing list in the name chaoha+tsa@uiuc.edu which we used to communicate to all members at that time.

In early 1998, TSA was registered as an official Registered Organization [RO] at UIUC. Then TSA came to have a permanent web page under UIUC web page [www.uiuc.edu]. We have to re-register TSA annually to keep our web space. Under the official domain name, www.uiuc.edu/ro/tsa, the 10MB space provided was a sufficient storage for all info and pictures. The first official web page was announced on Feb 14th, 1998. Many students might still remember contents of that which included past activities, announcements, and information provided by many contributors.

In late 1998, Nueng moved TSA mailing list from his email address, chaoha+tsa@uiuc.edu, to thaiuiuc@egroups.com. In the egroups.com, it was easy to keep and to search TSA member’s directory via internet. Later, in late 2000, egroups.com was bought by Yahoo! So TSA mailing list became thaiuiuc@yahoogroups.com.

In 1999 -2000, the new look of TSA web page was a dazzling style which was made from Macromedia Flash by Chanin Manopiniwes [Big]. This one has a very impressive animation technique (that cannot be shown in the below figure.) Unfortunately, after he left UIUC, there was no one actively maintaining it.

In 2001, Weerasak Witthawaskul [Wee] renovated TSA web page with his web team. They improved styles and made the web page very useful for every Thai student at UIUC. Moreover, he gathered the history of this web page and then wrote it down for everyone including you who read until this line!

Even though, the looks of the web pages were changed, the vision is still the same. That is, we want to build a virtual central portal for members and visitors to share useful information.

The pictures below show previous TSA web pages:

Logo

The logo, inspired by a Thai traditional house, was created in 1997.

From the concept below about a Thai traditional house:
“T” as a porch of a house called “Sharn Barn” in Thai

All THAI people come from different places but come to live under the same roof here at UIUC, beginning by stepping to the porch of the house and become TSA.

“S” as a jar called “Doom”

“Doom”, the round jar which is commonly seen everywhere with a Thai traditional house, is an image that signifies unity among all Thai STUDENTS. At the same time, it also mirrors our identity by the partial image of Thai flag shown inside the design.

“A” as a gable of the house called “Juaw”

Thai Student ASSOCIATION is the place which provides a small shade and serves as a refuge to Thai students here in the same way as a house does.
